Berberine

Berberine is an alkaloid found in the bark, leaves, branches, rhizomes, roots and/or stems of various plants such as barberry.

Traditionally, berberine has been used as an antimicrobial, antiprotozoal and antidiarrheal agent in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Berberine, when purified in the laboratory, is a yellow, odorless, and bitter tasting crystalline substance, and is widely used in medicine as the sulfate or hydrochloride.
